Chapter

1:1-3.

Introduction

1-2. The nature of the book. It is the Revelation,

the great unveiling par excellence of the future, which is ‘from Christ’ (subjective genitive), ‘which God gave him.’ In no sense is Revelation a sealed book, nor a book which is not to be studied and understood. It deals with things, which ‘must’ come to pass’ shortly’ or ‘soon’ and so are of vital import to God’s people now. It is an unveiling from Christ, given through an angel to John in signs or symbols. The purpose of the book. Its purpose is to bless or make happy the one who reads its words and also ‘those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it.’ The reason given for so doing is that the time of the fulfillment of its predictions is near. Hearing and keeping will result in faith and stabilizing hope while facing the trials and persecutions of this sinful age, in view of the triumph of Christ and the ultimate triumph of His own.

Rev 1:1

1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants– things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John,

John 3:32

32 “And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.

James 5:8

8 You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

1:4-8.

Salutation from the author

4. The author and recipients of the book. John the apostle is evidently the human author. The recipients are seven representative churches in the Roman province of Asia in western Asia Minor. These are representative of conditions in the universal church in every locality during the entire church age. Some commentators have attempted to identify the seven churches with seven successive periods of church history, typically suggesting that we are in the Laodiceal age now. This interpretive program has little/textual warrant, however.

Rev 1:4-5

4 John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,

5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,

Exod 3:14

14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

John 1:1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Isa 11:2

2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

5-8. Benediction from the Triune God.

‘Grace and peace’ are the two great possessions of the church in Christ (2 Thes 1:2) They come from God the Father, ‘Him who is, and who was, and who is to come,’ a periphrasis for the unspeakable name Jehovah (Yahweh), the unchangeable, eternally self-existing One . God the Spirit, symbolized in the completeness and totality of His activities as’ the seven Spirits before His throne’ (Ex 3:13-14 Is 11:2). God the Son Jesus Christ, Jesus, as the center of the book, is described in full detail, including His obedient earthly life, ‘the faithful witness’ (1 Cor 12:4) His glorious resurrection, ‘the first-born from the dead’ (Is 55:4). His future title and kingdom title and glory, ‘ruler of the kings of the earth’ (Col 1:18) ; His redemptive work, to him who loves us, and has freed us from our sins by his blood’ (Rom 3:25-26 1 Pet 1:18-20) His redemptive accomplishment and [He] has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father’. His worthiness of all praise, His Second Advent, His personal testimony. I am the Alpha and the Omega’ (the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, like our ‘A to Z’. Hence He is the beginning and end of all things which are consummated in this book (Is 44:6) He is the real Author of the Revelation.
